Hardly hip but by no means uncool either, this elite and quietly decadent Mission-style '20s hotel is a dreamy getaway on 12 fairytale acres of lush landscaping: hidden from the traffic and frenetic energy of Los Angeles, it almost feels like a country retreat. Guests can choose to spend long afternoons by the pool eating chilled grapes, relaxing in one of 91 individually decorated rooms, meandering through the gardens or subtly trying to spot which Hollywood player is sitting at the next table in the Restaurant (yes, that's its name). A new day spa is scheduled to open in January 2009; the pampering it offers will almost certainly be out of this world.
