Built as an apartment block in the 1950s, this tower was converted into a hotel by businessman Ian Schrager and designer Philippe Starck in the mid '90s, and immediately became the hottest spot in the city. It still carries a certain amount of star quality, but changes are afoot: Schrager left the company (Morgans Hotel Group) a few years ago, and Starck's designs are being replaced in late 2008 by those of Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, whose work is generally more homely and less minimalist. Expect the celeb-friendly Skybar and luxurious Agua Spa to remain, and the hotel to continue drawing a starry crowd.
