[title]Coachella 2014 kicked off on a sunny, 90-degree day with quick and early sets from the Bots, Flatbush Zombies and local Waxahatchee. GOAT and the Dum Dum Girls rocked the Outdoor Theatre, ZZ Ward shredded on her harmonica, and MS MR graced its audience with pretty decent covers of Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know?" and LCD Soundsystem's "Dance Yrself Clean"—a festival favorite no matter who sings it. As the day cooled down, HAIM and Neko Case sang prettily, Shlohmo repped LA with a solid set (and a surprise appearance by the Gaslamp Killer), and Woodkid wooed at the Gobi tent with insane percussion and a three-piece horn section. Bonobo busted out some flute in his set, while across the grounds Lucent Dossier wowed with crazy costumes and aerial feats. The Knife played to a growing crowd making its way toward the Coachella stage for Girl Talk (who brought out Busta Rhymes, among others), and Outkast, who invited Janelle Monae onstage to sing in front of their giant box—one of the more interesting stage sets we've seen at the fest. All in all, a great start; we can't wait for tomorrow.
