Tucked away in a bright brick building off of Avenue 56 in Highland Park is Good Girl Dinette, where Vietnamese comfort food meets a somewhat refined diner experience. In a town full of flashes in the pan, this perhaps would be just another gimmick; but, for the fact that for owner/chef Diep Tran—who comes from the family behind the Pho 79 chain—this dinette is a biography of sorts. The chicken pot pie is a take on the American classic—traditional chicken gravy is swapped out for a savory, comforting Vietnamese chicken curry, but the flaky, buttery crust is what seals the deal. Other hits: excellent renditions of vegetarian and chicken pho and a beautiful row of rice cakes topped with tofu and crispy French fries seasoned with garlic, cilantro and chilies for a welcome bit of a kick.
