Race

This is the LA premiere of David Mamet's much-talked-about play "Race." The play was first staged in New York in 2009 to mixed reviews. Five years later, it will play at the Kirk Douglas Theater, and it's the kind of play that will make for excellent conversation that extends long after the curtains fall. The play takes place entirely in a conference room, where three lawyers (two black and one white) consider the case of a white man accused of raping a young black woman, and their legal assistant (also a young black woman) who begins to play a major role. "I have never spent much time thinking about the themes of my plays, as, I have noticed, when an audience begins to talk about the play’s theme, it means the plot was no good. But my current play does have a theme, and that theme is race and the lies we tell each other on the subject," Mamet wrote in a New York Times editorial.
