Zoo-Aquarium de la Casa de Campo review

This attractively landscaped zoo is located slap bang in the heart of the Casa de Campo. The animals look as happy as can be expected of beasts held in captivity, although the big cats could really do with a bit more leg-room. At the Tierra de Gorilas ('Land of Gorillas') a sheet of reassuringly thick glass separates you from the massive, glowering silverbacks that prowl about. Children will enjoy walking through the shark tank and dolphinarium. There is also a petting zoo and a train ride.

Can get crowded at weekends, when people park freely on the approach roads, but still well worth a visit, especially with kids - ours loved it. Animals of nearly every kind, from flamingoes to rhinos, though we couldn't find the elephants that appear on road signs. The dolphin show is superb, and one suspects the seal show would be similar (we missed it). Although there is takeaway food on site, it is of the artery-thickening junkfood type - chips, nuggets, burgers - so a lot of locals bring their own picnics (best to put in backpack or buggy rather than carry around in heavy bag!). Time-saving tip - buy tickets online and print out the park map, then save yourself queuing on arrival. And like anywhere in Madrid - if you're driving and you don't know the roads, a satnav can be invaluable!
