Madrid's marathon, always held on a Sunday in late April, has grown year after year both in number of participants and prestige and is now considered to be among the world's top ten. In 2007 the event celebrates its 30th year. The halfway mark is in the dead centre of the city; thousands of cheery folk collect in Puerta del Sol to egg on the tiring runners; an estimated million spectators annually take to the city streets to catch the race. A week or two earlier there is a half marathon, a 20km race, organised by Agrupación Deportiva Marathon (91 402 69 62, www.admarathon.es).
