In old Islamic law, Taqiyya is like a strange get out clause which allows a person to deny their faith, or commit otherwise illegal acts, while they are at risk of persecution or in a condition of statelessness. Handy!

Abu Hamdan explores this by looking into aparently enforced enactments of the old law in Syria.
