The Central Library's classical-revival style disguises the fact that it was built only in 1934, since when it has become one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Its graceful exterior arc makes a photogenic match with the neighbouring sweep of the Town Hall extension. Inside, the circular library is dominated by a domed reading room, whose echoing acoustics make it almost impossible to study in silence. Note that the library will be closed for renovation until 2013.
