This site was the city's third main station (Central Station) in the late 19th century, which closed shortly after the railway line became obsolete in 1969. In 1986, the building was resurrected as G-Mex (Greater Manchester Exhibition centre) hosting sports and trade events.
It was also used as a concert venue - the Smiths and Oasis played here - before the MEN Arena usurped that role. Now with an attached conference centre (previously a separate entity), the place was rebranded and opened as Manchester Central in 2007. It regularly hosts major international events and political conferences.
