Beetham Tower is one of the most prominent additions to Manchester in recent years. Its fame rests chiefly on its height - the 47-storey tower soars 561ft (171m), making it by far the tallest building in the city, and the tallest in the UK outside London.
Split as it is between residential apartments (the Olympian penthouse is occupied by the building's architect, Ian Simpson), offices and the Hilton hotel, there's little here for the casual tourist except the pricey Cloud 23, a 'sky bar' with outstanding views across the city and the surrounding countryside.
