Don't be put off by the grey exterior and basic furniture: it's the beer that counts at the Crescent, one of Salford's older pubs, dating back to the mid 19th century. You'll fight for a seat with CAMRA types and eggheads from the nearby University of Salford (who really should be doing other things), all of whom crowd in for cask ales, with up to ten available at any one time.
Beers from the Pictish Brewing Company are particularly good, as is the Hawthorn Hobble from the Goose Eye Brewery. Regular quiz nights, a great jukebox (at least if Led Zeppelin is your idea of great music) and frequent beer festivals are additional highlights. A recently renovated live-music room adds a new dimension to the space.
