New Contemporaries

Like the X-Factor for artists, New Contemporaries is back, showcasing the best young talent from Britain‘s art schools.

37 graduate artists have been selected from over 1,000 hopefuls and their work forms the touring exhibition that’s about to trundle into Manchester. As you’d expect from a bunch of young ‘uns, the art on display here leans towards the experimental and controversial (the quality of work also varies wildly, but that’s just part of the New Contemporaries lottery). There’s work from across the artistic spectrum – film, video, installation and the like - but this year’s efforts also include a healthy selection of painting and photography. New Contemporaries has an impressive pedigree too. It’s been running since 1949 and, in the past, has kick-started the commercial careers of Damien Hirst and Gillian Wearing. Put on your curatorial hat and see if you can spot tomorrow’s art stars.

New Contemporaries Cornerhouse, 70 Oxford Street, M1 5NH (200 1500/www.cornerhouse.org). November 23-January 20 2008; Tue, Wed, Fri & Sat 11am-6pm, Thur 11am-8pm, Sun 2-6pm; free.
