Body Worlds

Roll up, roll! up for the freakiest (and most fascinating) show on Earth. Body Worlds is coming

If you’ve been seeing dead people lately, chances are you’ve been hanging out at the Museum of Science & Industry. On February 22 Body Worlds opens, an exhibition that consists entirely of the recently deceased. Preserved using a revolutionary technique (called plastination), 20 cadavers cavort around the Museum’s exhibition space, demonstrating the staggeringly complex workings of the human body. For those wanting to get a closer look, there are also some 200-plus internal organs and other ‘specimens’ on display.

These human bits and pieces come from people who, in their lifetime, donated their bodies to Gunther von Hagen – the inventor of plastination and possibly the world’s weirdest scientist – in a bid to educate the public about the human body. And educate they have: Body Worlds has traversed the globe becoming the most popular touring exhibition ever seen. Over 25 million people have so far come to gawp at these pickled personas. The Museum of Science & Industry is expecting queues round the block for this one, so you’ll need to book way in advance to satisfy your curiosity.

Body Worlds Museum of Science and Industry
, Liverpool Road, Castlefield, M3 4FP (832 2244/www.mosi.org.uk). February 22-June 29, 10am-5pm, Mon-Sun; £10 (Mon-Thu)/£11.50 (Fri-Sun)/£7-£8.50 children/£8 senior citizens/£9.50 students.

I saw the exhibition in London at my son's invitation. I went with an open mind and came away owing a huge debt of gratitude to Dr von Hagen and even more to those who had donated their bodies. We are looking inside our selves, not at a feak show! I now have more understanding and respect for the human body. Those who condemn this work have extremely narrow minds! I would consider donating. I went to see this exhibition in Manchester in June, as a fitness instructor, it was fascinating to see the muscles which I talk so much about in my classes. It has helped me appreciate the biomechanics of our bodies so much more. Plus Dr Gunther exhibits in a very tastefull way. Posted on Aug 19 2008 14:02

Wow what an experience! I had a job getting my head around the bodies once being living human beings. This man is a genius. It certainly gives you the insight into how your body works. I wish I had been to see it earlier as I am unable to get there again before it ends. I would recommend going to see it. It really is fascinating. Posted on Jun 19 2008 20:57

I went to see the exhibition in Manchester a couple of months ago with my Sports Therapies course, Due to my course i need to learn alot about the human body and everything to do with muscles. Although it freaked me out that the bodies were real, i enjoyed it alot and it helped me to understand more about the human body for being able to see it for real! I would definatley go again! i think that when people say it is only for entertainment and just to be disgusted they are wrong. i am 13 and am very interested in this exhibition, not for the gore but for the science! i think it will be exellent to see the human body and how it works in real! and also they are in everday positions. my brother plays guitar and i would really like to see this because it would be fasinating to see how his body would look in this position, under the skin!
