Horrible Histories: The Frightful First World War – The Exhibition

The new show at Imperial War Museum North brings to life the horrors of WWI

Based on the popular Horrible Histories series, this new exhibition at the Imperial War Museum North commemorates the ninetieth anniversary of the end of the First World War. 'Of all the history in the world,' says Horrible Histories author Terry Deary,'the story of the Great War is perhaps the most horrible. It is a story of what happens when machines go to war and human beings get in the way.'

Readers of the Horrible Histories series will probably know what questionable delights they’re in for with visitors being offered the chance to smell a battlefield latrine, follow beetle racing and learn how DORA was used to keep civilians in order. The exhibition uses Deary’s text and illustrations from Martin Brown as well as sounds, art, film and photographs from the museum’s extensive collections.
