Krispy Kreme
Krispy Kreme doughnuts opens a Manchester Branch
Manchester is clearly a city of sugar addicts. When the first ever Krispy Kreme opened at Piccadilly Gardens last month, the queues of those drooling for a doughy, sugary fix snaked half way along Mosley Street. Not one to miss out on something sweet, we trotted along to sample Krispy Kreme’s sticky wares – and were pleasantly surprised by what we found.
Visions of deep fat fryers, the clinging, cloying smell of cooking oil and tottering piles of greasy doughnuts proved unfounded. Instead, Krispy Kreme’s bright white, pseudo-sixties décor does as much as it can to distance itself from the heart-attack inducing qualities of its doughnuts. Staff are genuinely friendly – surely a first for a city centre fast food outlet. Comfy pod chairs invite cake lovers to sit and consider their choice of doughnut. And the doughnuts themselves – all 15 varieties – are surprisingly light and non-greasy.
They come served singly or boxed up by the dozen, there’s a new ‘summer fruits’ menu if you like your doughnuts on the exotic side (pomegranate and raspberry, anyone?) and Krispy Kreme also serves up a really rather good fresh coffee. All we need now is a treadmill under our desk so that we can work off all those extra calories…
Krispy Kreme City Tower, Piccadilly Plaza M1 4BD (236 6531/www.krispykreme.co.uk). 7am-8pm Mon-Fri, 8am-6pm Sat, 9am-5pm Sun.
