Salford gets over-inflated
Blow-up! Giant inflatable art bobs around the Lowry
Since the early 1990s international artists Simon Grennan and Chris Sperandio have collaborated on a series of over 60 projects. Their work has been seen in magazines, galleries and on television and they have even mass-produced a chocolate bar called ‘We Got It!’, but now their biggest challenge of all has come about: can they create three giant inflatable sculptures to sum up what Salford means to them?
Although it might sound like an odd sort of project, the results of their experiments with inflatable art will be displayed at The Promenade Gallery at The Lowry, as a result of the gallery’s first Transformations project with other commissions coming over the next two years. The arty inflatables are around 16-feet high and will represent how the artists see Salford via a process of observation, remembrance and refinement, taking their inspiration from a range of logos and Salford-related images. There’s no word yet as to whether you’ll have to pay a pound and take your shoes off before you bounce on them.
Giant Psychic Avatars of Salford at The Lowry, Pier 8, Salford Quays, M50 3AZ (0870 787 5780/www.thelowry.com) until 19 June.
