'Neverland: Rediscovering Child Art' at The Whitworth Art Gallery

My child could have painted that! Or could it...

The Whitworth Gallery is in rude health at the moment and Neverland promises to be yet another thought-provoking show. Nearly 80 years on from their first exhibition of children’s art, the gallery displays paintings from those artists who were inspired by children’s art, including Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Joan Miro, Karel Appel and Lucebert.

The exhibition promises to examine the work of two experts in children’s art, Professor Franz Cizek and Marion Richardson, who was behind the Whitworth’s original exhibition in 1928. So, if you’ve ever wandered around a gallery and thought that there wasn’t much difference between the modern art on the walls and the scrawls that your child brings home from playschool then you might be intrigued by the ‘Could a Child Do That?’ section which mixes works by children and contemporary artists and leaves you to guess who the professionals really are.
Neverland: Rediscovering Child Art at The Whitworth Art Gallery, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, M15 6ER (275 7450/www.whitworth.man.ac.uk), May 24-August 17.
