Caribbean Carnival of Manchester 2008

The Caribbean festival returns to Manchester for its fifth year

Established in 2004 the Caribbean Carnival of Manchester has been successful in bringing excitement to Alexandra Park, and this year’s event promises to be no exception. Last year’s carnival attracted record numbers of participants, with over 15 troupes and more than 450 performers parading on a route around Moss Side and Whalley Range before terminating in the park where prizes are announced for best band and, of course, the hotly contested Carnival Queen.

The floats, costumes and parade aren’t the only attractions though. As you would expect there is a chance to enjoy a range of Caribbean food, from roti and curry to jerk chicken, and a range of stalls offering the chance to buy clothes and accessories and a family-friendly fairground. The stage area will once again feature a range of musical highlights from DJs to steel bands and the best of R ’n’ B, reggae and soul. This event is free and it’s well worth turning up to enjoy a glimpse of Caribbean culture.
Caribbean Carnival of Manchester Alexandra Park, 180 Russell Street, Moss Side, M16 7JL (www.caribbeancarnivalofmanchester.com). 12noon-8pm, Aug 16 & 17. Free.
