Manchester: Yang Sing Oriental Hotel

With a selection of 30 Champagnes, rooms that come fitted with their own private spas and one of the city’s best chefs lending advice on food and drink, there’s one hotel in Manchester that’s acting like the credit crunch never happened: the Yang Sing Oriental

If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Manchester’s newest boutique hotel is the brainchild of Gerry and Harry Yeung, the owners of, you guessed it, the ever-popular Yang Sing restaurants. Designed by Roberta Fulford, the 48-room hotel is a glamorous fusion of East-meets-West (with a touch of luxury thrown on top). Each room, for example, is individually styled, while guests can choose their own aromatherapy scents to perfume their stay. A private residents’ lounge comes complete with a Ming Dynasty bed.

The multi-award-winning chef, Robert Kisby (late of the Cock O’Barton gastropub) has had a hand designing the food and drink menus in the Oku Champagne bar. And there's 24-hour room service and traditional Chinese tea ceremonies to meet the needs of the most demanding of guests.

All this opulence comes at a price, though: rooms start at £179 per night, and make their way up to an eye watering £569 for an overnight stay in the Grand Emperor Suite. But with service and style this good, this is one hotel worth tightening your belt for.

I have to disagree with NO Brian. The YS is luverly. Quiet, super comfortable and the staff are most helpful. As for staying at the Midland I'd rather stay in an airport hangar....... Posted on Dec 03 2008 09:23

I have stayed in this hotel and its very disapointing, the hotel manager seems to think that 'teething problems' such as no one bothering to restock or clean rooms, or get back to you if you make a complaint, is acceptable behaviour, AVOID and go to the Midland instead, its a very poor mans Mandarin Oriental, more similar to a cheap B&B Posted on Nov 15 2008 20:09
