Exposures Student Film Festival
Reckon you’ve got what it takes to be the next Quentin Tarantino? Then you’d best check out the competition as the annual Exposures Student Film Festival gets underway
At the heart of this 15 year-old shindig is a nationwide competition. This year, Danny Boyle – the directorial brains behind cult films, ‘Trainspotting’, ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘28 Days Later’ – presides over the Grand Jury, selecting the best shorts, experimental film, animation, drama and documentaries submitted by graduate filmmakers from all over the UK. Some of this work can be seen during a screening programme that takes place at Cornerhouse and, for the first time at Urbis; there are over 70 screenings on offer during the four days of the festival.
But, for budding filmmakers, producers and directors, Exposures is also a rare chance to hone their skills, courtesy of a series of workshops and networking sessions. Highlights include a writers’ workshop run by the team behind Channel 4’s ‘Shameless’; a behind-the-scenes exposé of ‘Dragons’ Den’; and a succession of ‘in conversation’-style talks with some of the moving image industry’s leading lights, including Sue Murphy (Head of Features at Channel 4), Paul Abbott (‘Shameless’) and Danny Cohen (Controller of BBC 3). All together now: lights, cameras, action!
Exposures UK Student Film Festival screenings and events at Cornerhouse, 70 Oxford Street, M1 5NH (200 1500/www.cornerhouse.org) and Urbis, Cathedral Gardens, M4 3BG (605 8200/www.urbis.org.uk). November 23-27; times and prices vary.
