Beetham Tower

301-303 Deansgate

Beetham Tower is one of the newest and certainly most prominent additions to 21st-century. Its current fame rests chiefly on its height – 47 storeys and 561 feet (171 metres) high, by far the tallest building in the city and reputedly the tallest in the UK outside of London – although these are statistics that are unlikely to last for long. Taller projects are already under construction by the side of Piccadilly station. Split between residential apartments (the Olympian penthouse is occupied by the building’s architect, Ian Simpson), offices and the Hilton hotel, there’s little except the pricey Sky Bar available for the casual tourist – but standing at its base and gawping to the heavens may be enough.
