St Mary’s (The Hidden Gem)

Mulberry Street

The aptly named Hidden Gem – founded in 1794 and claimed to be the oldest post-Reformation catholic church in the country – is approached either from the drably unimaginative Brazenose Street or, more enticingly, via a pair of decorated alleyways leading from John Dalton Street. Outside, an impressively sculpted stone arch haloes the entrance doorway, while inside Royal Academician Norman Adams’ beautiful Stations of the Cross series of paintings adorns the walls. It’s a busy functioning church, so visitors should show discretion if just sightseeing; check for times of services.
