Cathedral Gardens

One of the main beneficiaries of the post-bomb rebuilding, this stunning glass structure initially attracted controversy over the extent of its public funding (an alleged £1 million a year council subsidy) before its mission – a museum of the modern city – generated widespread indifference. Abandoning the admission fee has yet to stabilise its reputation. The permanent exhibition – addressing the question ‘what is a city?’ – is a little over-earnest, and the bars of tinted glass throughout needlessly disrupt any panoramic views. Nevertheless, everything else – from the diagonally rising glass elevator and an engaging series of temporary exhibits – make this a vital part of the city’s new landscape.
