Manchester Art Gallery

Mosley Street

A noted home to some stunning Pre-Raphaelite art. Highlights of the three floors of the permanent collection include Rossetti’s Astarte Syriaca as well as notable pieces by both Turner and Modigliani and a superb collection of impressionist paintings of early 20th-century by the underrated Adolph Valette, Lowry’s early art teacher. There’s also a changing programme of prestigious exhibitions on the top floor. The building itself, designed by Charles Barry in 1824, had an extensive £35 million extension and refit in 2002, letting in more light, opening a new wing and installing an interactive children’s gallery.
