Briton’s Protection

50 Great Bridgewater Street

Like moths to a flame, drinkers are drawn to the Briton’s Protection by the red neon sign over the door. The roomy interior is pub perfection: brass fixtures and fittings, and paintings commemorating the 1819 Peterloo Massacre. See if you can spot the two football managers who feature in the paintings. At lunchtime, punters are mostly business people; later on, Bridgewater Hall concertgoers sneaking in a pre-show quickie. Brews from Jennings and Robinson’s are the staples, but the real attractions are the 150-plus whiskies and bourbons.
