This grade II-listed building first opened as licensed premises in 1778; between the wooden panels, tiles and bar service bells, it’s obvious that not much has changed here since. Football and boxing memorabilia bring the snug bar a little more in line with the times. Brews from JW Lees, Holt’s and Tetley’s are well looked after and cheaper than at other places and singalongs sometimes take place around the piano, while the upstairs room has been the scene of many a left-wing debate over the years. And it’d be remiss not to mention the pub’s home-produced pickled eggs.
