Committed bibliophiles may sigh for the good old days of musty corridors, rickety library steps and personal recommendations; yet Waterstones reigns supreme on high streets up and down the country. Its Deansgate store (another one opened last year in the Arndale extension) is a vast temple to the published word, and has a particularly good arts section. There’s a quiet café, helpful staff, and three large floors of shiny, ink-scented stock to get lost in.
