This well-loved, characterful hotel, housed in the old Refuge Assurance Building, was recently acquired by the prestigious Principal Hotels group, and received a £7 million facelift in 2005. The restored glass dome over the vast reception makes for an impressive entrance, while the new Tempus bar mixes original marble flooring and Victorian tiles with cool design. While there are 70 new, stylish bedrooms, the remaining 200 or so have yet to be re-vamped, but are charmingly traditional and boast majestic ceilings.
