Heaton Hall

Heaton Park, Prestwich

An elegant Grade I-listed neo-classical country house designed by James Wyatt in the late 18th century and expanded by Lewis Wyatt in the 1820s. It was home to the Earls of Wilton until purchased by the council in 1902. In 1906, a section of the hall became a branch of City Galleries, used to house its growing collection of paintings and decorative objects. The organisation restored the houses in the 1980s and ’90s. Only half of the house (13 rooms) is currently open to the public – a fire-damaged wing remained gutted at the time of writing, but the ground floor still hosts interesting temporary exhibitions.
