Strangeways

1 Southall Street, Manchester

The intriguingly named Strangeways – officially HM Prison since the 1990s – owes its fame to the Smiths’ 1987 album Strangeways, Here We Come and to the 1990 riot that led to extensive rebuilding. It was designed by Town Hall architect Alfred Waterhouse in the 1860s; only the most disastrous of tourist excursions will end up within its walls, but its panopticon 234-foot (71-metre) tower makes it one of the city centre periphery’s more distinctive landmarks.
