Gaskell House

84 Plymouth Grove, Ardwick

Neglected for years, the home of Elizabeth Gaskell is now finally undergoing a renovation. The author – one of’s most esteemed novelists and social commentators – lived with her family in this Regency-style villa between 1850 and 1865, hosting visits from Charlotte Bronte, Dickens, Thackeray and John Ruskin. Access may be limited during the renovation period – phone to check before visiting.

I found visiting the house is a nice opportunity to discover the works of writer Elisabeth Gaskell and imagine the great potential of such a precious building. Posted on May 08 2007 20:19

I have been to the Gaskell House few times. The books on display and the paintings are worth a visit. Posted on May 08 2007 18:21

Well-worth a visit to understand more about Elizabeth Gaskell (writer of "North and South" and "Cranford", among others). Information boards explain her significance as a literary figure, and the House is a Grade II* listed building. Posted on May 08 2007 16:47
