Wythenshawe Hall
Wythenshawe Park, Northenden
Built in 1540, many of the hall’s original Tudor timbers survived traumas inflicted when it held out as a Royalist stronghold in a three-month siege during the English Civil War (hence the Oliver Cromwell statue opposite). Much of the building is occupied by council departments, but key rooms with period memorabilia (such as the superb dining room) are open to the public. The hall stands in 250-acre Wythenshawe Park.
