Greater Manchester Police Museum

57A Newton Street

An easily overlooked curiosity tucked into an unfashionable corner of town, this converted former police station – far larger than it looks from the outside, in the appropriate manner of Dr Who’s TARDIS police box – contains early CSI: Miami-style case histories, the original prison cells, haunting Victorian mugshots and cases of grimly inventive confiscated weaponry, all overseen and explained by retired police officers.

I tried twice to enter this museum. First on 30th December (A WORKING DAY) and then on 13th January. No answer on 30th Dec and a notice that the museum was closed because of a power cut on 13th January. There was a small power cut in Manchester which lasted minutes, but is this a good reason to close a museum which is hardly ever open anyway? The shop next door and the whole street had light when I turned up at around 12:30pm to find a written note on the door. Looked like an excuse for a day off.
I dont think I will bother a third time. Posted on Jan 13 2009 16:51
