Once a rather dusty example of a museum in the old-school mould, this building (designed in 1890 by Alfred Waterhouse, the architect of London's Natural History Museum) received a refit in 2003, allowing much-needed daylight to reach its murky corners - although its corridor layout would still confound a tomb raider.

Persevere, though, for highlights that include a notable collection of Egyptian mummies, the recently revamped Mammals Hall and a full-size replica of a Tyrannosaurus skeleton (named Stan), posed in full hunting mode.
