A grand Edwardian building, the Bury Art Gallery is worth a visit to see founder Thomas Wrigley's collection of 200 or so artworks, including paintings by Turner, Constable and Landseer. The gallery also stages contemporary exhibitions and is keen on kids: a table set in the middle of the main gallery encourages reading, role play and colouring-in.
Nearby, East Lancashire Railway's working steam trains, and the new Fusiliers Museum (whose collection dates back to Napoleonic times), round out a Bury cultural day-trip.
