A great chance to see some of the orchestral highlights from Bizet's final and most lauded work, 'Carmen'. It's matched with Shostakovitch's Fifth Symphony, written after he himself fell hopelessly in love with a Spanish woman called Roman Carmen, a love that remained unrequited, something which is achingly felt in the music.
But to start the evening, 'Le Corsaire' sees Berlioz getting your swash well and truly buckled.
