Islington Mill, a converted cotton warehouse, has led something akin to a cultural revolution in Salford over the past decade. The building, just a few minutes' walk from Manchester City Centre, houses 50 artists' studios, a gallery and art school, recording studio, gig space, B&B (see B&B review) and more besides.

It's home to the annual Sounds from the Other City music festival and has close links to Chapel Street, a mile-long stretch of Victorian pubs, university buildings and churches just a stone's throw away. A recent refurb means the Mill is now open every Thursday and Friday, although regular music and art events run throughout the week.

And while Chapel Street and its surroundings are still a very long way from the scrubbed-up glamour of Manchester, Islington Mill, the epitome of art-school cool, offers the kind of edgy underground entertainment you'd kick yourself if you missed.
