Mancunians don't often get a chance to barbecue, so the Grill is a welcome arrival with its food cooked over open flame to seal in moisture. You can choose from the lobsters that float placidly in their tank or from the display of fresh fish - there's even a chance to sample the notorious beer-fed and massaged Kobe beef. Complete the feast with a split, a delicious fruity milkshake.

The food is nice but don't even think of going to Grill on the Alley for a special occasion.

I made a mistake of booking a table for my boyfriend's birthday and only had one request - bringing him a sticky toffee pudding with a candle at the end of the meal. I've asked for it when booking online, then called them in advance to confirm this can be done. On the day I specifically told the waitress to bring it even if we don't order a dessert or if we order something else. She said I shouldn't worry about it - well, it turned out I should have! After we ordered a light dessert (me having an expectation of the sticky toffee pudding to arrive with the candle as well) it got delivered to our table - with a candle (I have to give them that). But a lovely surprise got ruined.

Maybe I should have gone to the kitchen to make sure everyone is aware of my special request - but this was simply disappointing and made me notice a number of other things - such as sticky cutlery which hasn't been washed properly, or the wine being too warm.

For £150 bill this is not the level of service I would expect, and although I might come again for a casual dinner I do not recommend it for anything special.
