This sprawling academic complex is one of the country's largest educational establishments. Amid the beautiful collection of red-brick buildings and theatre venues (Martin Harris Centre, the John Thaw Studio Theatre), history abounds - the golden generation of British alternative comedy (Ben Elton, Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson) studied here, Ernest Rutherford's research led to the splitting of the atom, while 'the Baby', one of the world's first computers, was built here in 1948.
