A long way from the grimly functional mill buildings so often captured by its eponymous subject and raison d'être, the Lowry marked a tipping point for the previously isolated Salford Quays development when it opened in spring 2000. This landmark waterside building now houses the world's largest collection of LS Lowry's art, with its galleries regularly presenting themed exhibitions of the 'matchstick' man's work.

Lowry is only half of the story, however, as the centre brings together an amazing variety of visual and performing arts projects under one roof. As well as the contemporary exhibitions in its galleries (displaying everything from photography to conceptual art), the steel-clad wonder has also hosted more award-winning theatre productions than any other regional venue.

Its two theatres and additional performing arts space receive blockbuster musicals, dance, opera, comedy, ballet, children's shows, jazz, folk and popular music acts and West End productions.

The restaurant and terrace bar situated in the south side of the building, meanwhile, both serve breathtaking views along with sustenance, while its close proximity to Imperial War Museum North make a trip to Salford Quays doubly worthwhile.
