The newest boutique hotel in the South Beach Group stable, the Metropole is a cut above its rowdy cousins. Wild parties and candy colours have been replaced by a hushed ambience and smart flats with kitchens. There is no bar - a good thing if you want peace. And the courtyard entrance is fashionable: bamboo plants, smart brown sunbeds and oriental wood furniture. The lobby is stylishly discreet - it's off an interior courtyard - but too cramped for suitcases. The apartments are dark and sleek: grey walls, white leather furniture, chrome accents, pinstriped drapes. There are some design flaws - not enough lights, no telephones beside the bed in some rooms. But the kitchens are well equipped. And the hidden location, near the low-key SoFi neighbourhood, is a plus. See also the Catalina, Chelsea and the Whitelaw.
