Designed by Norman Giller, the Best Western Thunderbird is spectacularly tacky, from the Native American motifs outside to the flamboyant lobby, complete with vintage T-bird car, a statue of Marilyn Monroe, stained-glass windows and a giant aquarium. There's a diner, tiki bar and huts, and a courtyard swimming pool. The bedrooms are clean and generic - almost identical to sister motel Travelodge Monaco. A sea of condos has washed away Sunny Isles' motels, but these two glorious gems remain - and you should get there before the wrecking ball does.
