A majestic monument to the Gables of the Florida boom years, the Biltmore boasts a landmark 300ft bell tower modelled after the Giralda in Seville, as well as the largest pool in the US. It's worth checking in for the history alone. The lobby has an intricate hand-painted vaulted ceiling with French and Spanish furniture and large wooden aviaries containing songbirds. Marble floors, oriental rugs, 25ft columns, oversized arches and blue and white porcelain planters add to the grandiosity. Upstairs, Egyptian cotton duvets and plump feather beds add comfort to the period drama. To top it off, there's a world-class golf course, a spa, a wine club and sumptuous Sunday brunches. The only drawback is the lonely location: it's a 20-minute walk to central Coral Gables, or a 20-minute drive to the beach.
