The flagship boutique of the South Beach Group, the Catalina is fun, trendy and affordable, if a bit rough around the edges. Set in three deco-style buildings on Collins, it's a sprawling party palace for those who can't afford the Delano. The Catalina wing boasts a funky white lobby bar with retro touches: shag rug, Eero Aarnio globe chairs and vintage film posters - a playful setting for happy hour. Bedrooms here are small, minimalist affairs. But next door, in the new Dorset wing, the aesthetic is more chic. Bedrooms are dark and slick with brown cushions, damask wallpaper, wall sconces and wood floors. On the roof, there is a swimming pool. Downstairs, the Kung Fu sushi lounge and library bar buzz on weekends. Throughout, style reigns over substance; there are design flaws, such as pitch-dark corridors and poor reading lights, but then guests here don't tend to read. Ask for a quiet room if you don't like a party. See also the Chelsea, the Metropole and the Whitelaw.
