Opened in 1931, the huge Lido is Milan's largest open-air pool. Created as a sport and amusement park, it was decked out with a pier, pontoons and Venetian street lamps - but was, surprisingly, far less popular than anticipated. Milan's municipality bought it in 1936, and made it a sports-only complex: the result was a wild success. Sun loungers, waterslides and a beach volleyball area have been added over the years to up the holiday atmosphere. The grounds also have three gyms, two football grounds and four tennis courts.
