Named in honour of the late director Giorgio Strehler, the Piccolo Teatro Strehler is generally acknowledged as the city's top venue. Its director, Luca Ronconi, is highly respected, and the fact that the theatre is publicly owned means that it is one of the very few to receive adequate funding. There are actually two theatres in regular use at the main site: the Teatro Strehler and the Teatro Studio, which looks like a smaller, red-brick version of London's National Theatre; the Piccolo Teatro Grassi is on via Rovello, a stone's throw from the Duomo. Recent large-scale productions have included Moby Dick, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.
