The best example of the evolution from the city streets to the beach is Arenile, the closest beach club to the city centre. Once a fairly scummy beach in the shadow of the decommissioned steelworks at Bagnoli, Arenile was cleaned up as part of a neighbourhood renovation. It experienced modest success as a beach, until the owners realised that most people were turning up in the evenings to hang around the bar and catch the great sunsets.
These days it draws the crowds with live music (BB King and Suzanne Vega
have played here, although the focus is generally indie and dance), followed by
a disco on the sand.
