Here's hoping this brand-new design hotel is a harbinger of things to come in the Port area; the city fathers have big plans to spruce up and eventually even pedestrianise the zone. Meanwhile, this giant property has added a touch of upmarket appeal - though guests might prefer to hire a full-time car and driver in order to avoid the dingy and (at night) threatening streets outside. Designed by the late Kenzo Tange, the hotel is wonderfully lavish, and loaded with art and antiques. Rooms are luxuriously appointed with the sleekest of fittings, and the lovely rooftop spa and fitness centre features Hermès sunbeds. There's also a restaurant and a noteworthy sushi bar - worth a try even if you're not a guest.
