Arnie the Doughnut

Returning for a ninth season, the New York Musical Theatre Festival premieres 34 musical productions this year, including a handful of family-friendly shows. The fest runs July 9--29 at three midtown theaters: 45th St Theatre (354 W 45th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves), the PTC Performance Space (555 W 42nd St at Eleventh Ave) and the Pershing Square Signature Center (480 W 42nd St between Dyer and Tenth Aves). With more than 80 past festival offerings moving on to award-winning productions in NYC and beyond, chances are good you and your tykes may see the next big thing before anyone else even knows it exists.

Arnie, the Doughnut

Based on Laurie Keller's book of the same name, this comedy brings human-pastry relations to an entirely new level. When a chocolate-frosted doughnut finally gets picked for a new home, both he and his purchaser are in for a few surprises. Fri July 13 at 7pm; Sat July 14 at 1, 4pm; Wed July 18 at 1pm; Sat July 21 at 11am, 2pm. PTC Performance Space, 555 W 42nd St at Eleventh Ave (nymf.org). $25. Ages 3 and up.

It's On!
Tasked with creating and recording the theme song for a brand-new TV show, Lucy and Charlie take a stage journey through ditties spanning the television age, from I Love Lucy and COPS to True Blood and The Brady Bunch. Tue July 10 at 8pm; Wed 11, July at 4:30, 8pm. Pershing Square Signature Center, 480 W 42nd St between Dyer and Tenth Aves (nymf.org). $20. Ages 10 and up.

My Perfect Pet
All Caitlin wants for her tenth birthday is a puppy, but her parents aren't so sure she's ready for the responsibility. Caitlin navigates through schoolwork and little-brother blues to convince them she's up to the task. Fri July 27 at 4:30pm; Sat July 28 at 11am, 3pm. 45th Street Theatre, 354 W 45th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves (nymf.org). $20. Ages 3 and up.

Show Me Real

This down-to-earth story uses dance, song, narrative and video projection to highlight the never-changing struggle young performers face when heading to New York City in hopes of making it on Broadway. Wed July 11 at 8pm; Sat July 14 at 7, 10pm. PCT Perfermance Space, 555 W 42nd St at Eleventh Ave (nymf.org). $25. Ages 10 and up.

Stand Tall
Based (loosely) on the David and Goliath Bible story, this modern smack-down tale features a different kind of rock than the one David used to stone his enemy. Instead of resorting to war to decide the next king of Israel, the characters here resort to a fierce Guitar Hero battle. Thu July 19 at 8pm; Sun July 22 at 1, 4:30pm; Wed July 25 at 5pm; Fri July 27 at 8pm; Sun July 29 at 1pm. 45th Street Theatre, 354 W 45th St between Eighth and Ninth Aves (nymf.org). $25. Ages 5 and up.
